This study investigates the labour supply structure of immigrant women in Australia using the 1990 Survey of Income, Housing Costs and Amenities. It is deduced that immigrant women from non-English-speaking backgrounds (NESB) have a lower probability of being employed but, among the sub-sample of employed women, they work more hours per year than Australian-born women or immigrant women from English-speaking backgrounds (ESB). This study indicates that legislation at the time of the Howard government, causing immigrants to be ineligible for government benefits for the first two years of settlement in Australia, may have moderately increased the utilisation of human capital of immigrant women from non-English-speaking backgrounds.
